Where It All Began: My Garden Journey
🌿 A Feeling, Not a Plan
Every garden starts somewhere. Not always with a plan but often with a feeling.
For me it began with a simple connection to plants. The way colour can lift a space, how scent settles in the air and how texture and foliage bring depth and movement throughout the seasons. Over time that interest grew into something deeper a genuine appreciation for how outdoor spaces can shape how we feel.
That connection now sits at the heart of everything I do through Good Gardens.
🌱 Finding Calm Through Gardening
I’ve struggled with mental health for as long as I can remember, alongside undiagnosed ADHD until recently, which at times made it difficult to properly switch off or stay focused.
That became especially clear during lockdown.
Like many people, I found that time challenging. Life slowed down, routines changed and there was more time alone. But spending time outside even in small ways began to shift things. Watching plants grow, noticing subtle changes day by day and working with something steady and natural brought a sense of calm and focus.
Gardening became more than just an interest. It became something grounding and my garden became my sanctuary.
🌸 Spaces That Draw You In
That experience changed how I see gardens. Not just as something to look at but as spaces you can step into and feel better in.
Spaces that draw you in, hold your attention and make you want to spend time there. Not overly designed or forced, but natural, layered and evolving over time.
Through thoughtful planting, using colour, scent and texture, even a small garden or courtyard can feel immersive and complete. It doesn’t need to be perfect — it just needs to feel right.
🐝 More Than Just a Garden
A garden is more than just how it looks.
Even the smallest space can support pollinators like bees, butterflies and hoverflies. In built-up areas gardens play an important role in supporting biodiversity, acting as part of a wider network of wildlife corridors that allow nature to move and thrive.
By choosing plants that flower across the seasons a garden can provide a steady source of food and shelter. Small, thoughtful decisions that make a lasting difference.
💧 Bringing Life Into the Space
Water is another simple but powerful addition.
A small feature, a container, or even a shallow dish can attract birds and insects. Adding movement and life to a garden. It doesn’t need to be complex to be effective, but it can completely change how a space feels and functions.
🌼 A Garden With Purpose
For me it’s about balance.
A garden should be somewhere you enjoy spending time but it should also have purpose. It should support wellbeing and encourage you to step outside and feel like a natural extension of your space.
Not something forced, but something that settles and improves over time.
